Although the Boulton Paul Defiant was the least effective of the RAF’s interceptor fighters
at the beginning of the Battle of Britain, it is noteworthy that it entered service later than both the Spitfire and Hurricane.

The Defiant was quickly shifted to nightfighter duties when it became clear that the additional weight of its power-operated turret made it an easy target for Luftwaffe fighters.
